Holocaust memorial service 2009
Each year, on the Sunday closest to the European Holocaust Memorial Day of 27th January, Sefton Council holds its Memorial Service by the war memorial in Southport town centre. It commemorates not only the Holocaust perpetrated by the Nazis, but also more recent tragedies in places like Rwanda.
This year it featured representatives from the Gypsy and Gay communities, as well as Jewish and Christian communities.
The service was concluded with the choir performing a song written by a captive of the Treblinka death camp.

To coincide with the memorial, the Atkinson Art Gallery is staging a Holocaust exhibition of art works created in various schools.
