Cycle Race comes to Southport

Southport celebrated its newly won “Cycle Town” status when it welcomed the Tour of Britain Cycle Race this Sunday. The fast paced race hit the main roads of Southport at lunchtime today, after coming from the country lanes of Leyland. It took only a few moments to negotiate the turn at Hesketh Park roundabout and flash towards to Sprint Finish Line along Lord Street, accompanied by almost as many police motorcycle outriders clearing the route before them with sirens blazing.

Several entertainments were on hand for visitors and spectators to enjoy, before and after the excitement of the race. Clowns, monocycles, childrens cycles and carts filled the Monument and Town Hall gardens. Also there were information marquees providing details about Southport’s ‘Cycle Town’ status.
